Our Services

Headquarters Counseling Center and its trained staff are dedicated to providing "life support" services in Douglas County and throughout the state of Kansas. HQCC has local counseling lines for Douglas County and Baldwin City and is the state receiver of the two national suicide prevention networks. HQCC also runs a Suicide Survivors Support Group. The Healing After Suicide group is open to anyone who has lost a loved one to suicide. HQCC also provides educational presentations on preventing suicide and self-harm for junior and senior high students, community members, school staff, staff of university housing programs, university students, and mental health clinicians in Douglas County. HQCC is accredited by the American Association of Suicidology.

These lines are answered 24/7 and anyone in Douglas County who has a concern about suicide may call. If you reside outside of Douglas County, Kansas, and have a concern about suicide, call either of the toll-free numbers below.

National Hopeline Network

During March of 2001, Headquarters was asked to join the National Hopeline Network.

This toll-free suicide prevention line can be reached from anywhere in the US by dialing 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433), en Español 1-877-SUICIDA (784-2432). All centers on the National Hopeline Network have been accredited by the American Association of Suicidology or CONTACT USA.

The Kristin Brooks Hope Center in Virginia coordinates the National Hopeline Network. The center was founded by Reese Butler within a year of his wife Kristin's death by suicide.

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline

HQCC is one of the founding agencies of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (NSPL) and has been a part of the network since its inception in January of 2005.

The NSPL is a 24-hour, toll-free suicide prevention service available to anyone in suicidal crisis. If you need help, please dial 1-800-273-TALK (8255). You will be routed to the closest possible crisis center in your area. With over 120 crisis centers across the country, our mission is to provide immediate assistance to anyone seeking mental health services. Call for yourself, or someone you care about. Your call is free and confidential.

The Helpline and the Hopeline are always answered, never busy. Calls are routed based on the area code of the caller, the call is forwarded to a nearby center which serves that area. If the designated center's lines are busy, the call is re-routed to another center on the network.

Headquarters Counseling Center staff now receive calls from people from all parts of Kansas. Teenagers and adults with concerns about suicide - such as thoughts of suicide, fears about someone close who seems to be suicidal, or grief after the loss of someone to suicide.

Headquarters Counseling Center is committed to keeping this service available to all Kansans.
