Happy July everyone! I know it's been a minute since we got a newsletter out. Sorry. We've been BUSY!! We've been trekking to all corners of the state this year.
Monica, our Kansas Suicide Prevention Resource Center Director has been burning up the highway. She's given suicide prevention trainings from Dodge City, Emporia, KCK, KCMO, Hutch, Fort Hays, Lawrence, and so many points in between--in fact, this July, she's even been rocking it without a/c in her car!! That's devotion!
Kristin, our Director of Counseling Services, has been hard at work with 12 new volunteer counselors-in-training, preparing for our KU interns this fall, and keeping our collaborative efforts strong with organizations around Douglas County. You might have seen the story from LJ World of her presenting at Lawrence Memorial Hospital that got me in trouble for sharing it on social media.... She didn't like the photo they used, but I LOVED it! I think it shows her passion. You can also click here to learn about sponsoring training for one of our INCREDIBLE Volunteer Counselors!

Me? Well I've been running around the state too. Seeking funding sources, building relationships with other nonprofits, and yes, asking you all for money. The work we do here simply doesn't exist without your support. THANK YOU to you amazing souls who give, create fundraisers, and spread the word. Many people think we're state or county-funded, but we just simply aren't. The only thing keeping us open is your kindness.
As the only National Suicide Prevention Lifeline crisis center serving all of Kansas, we keep an eye on volume, call trends, and public events to keep our call room fully staffed by our INCREDIBLE volunteer counselors. An average of June-July this year compared to June-July of 2015 shows a 65% increase in callers! June 2015 compared to June 2018 shows an 81% increase!
If you're still considering your annual gift to Headquarters, please click below and make a gift. Personally, the easiest way for me to give is as a Sustainer. My credit card is automatically charged every month on a date that easiest for me. I barely notice, then after a few months, I feel great that my gift has added up. Click here to learn about becoming a sustainer and give a little every month.
I wish you all an incredible (what's left of) summer. Be kind, feel the kindness of others, and know how valued and wonderful YOU are!!
Director of Development

Many of you might still be thinking about the deaths of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain. There were so many articles and so much media surrounding them. I'd like to add an Op-Ed to this newsletter. What we are still not getting about preventing suicide, its contagion
I encourage you to read our statement on Kate Spade's death as well. If you are a survivor of suicide, know that it's not your fault. There's never 1 reason why someone dies by suicide, its many reasons. You are not alone, and we're here for you. 800-273-8255 or directly at 785-841-2345. You can also text KANSAS to 741741 or chat online at HeadquartersCounselingCenter.org
